Five-Run Ninth Gives DU a 12-7 Win over Missouri-St. Louis

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — Davenport baseball (4-8) secured a 12-7 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis (4-9) on Wednesday at Roy E. Lee Field on the campus of SIUE. Davenport's offense was highlighted by two home runs and a five-run ninth inning that sealed the win. The Panthers also had nine different players record a RBI in the balanced attack. UMSL was hurt by five errors as Davenport scored five unearned runs in the game.

UMSL took an early lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly by Mitch Bonczkowski that brought in Justin Terhaar, making it 1-0. In the second inning, Davenport responded with three runs. Aiden Warn started things off by being hit by a pitch, and Dylan Pawenski followed with another hit-by-pitch. Travis Liford singled to right, driving in Warn. A throwing error allowed Pawenski to score, and Liford later scored on a sacrifice fly by Cam Johnson. UMSL added one in the bottom half with a solo homer from Ayden Cline. The inning ended with Davenport leading 3-2.

Davenport added a run in the third when Sam Clay doubled, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cody Hultink. UMSL countered with three runs in their half, highlighted by RBIs from Brandon Johnson and Owen Faith, and a run scoring on a throwing error, pushing them ahead 5-4. UMSL extended its lead to 6-4 in the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly from Cooper Blythe.

UMSL added another run in the fifth inning, making it 7-4, before Davenport tied the game in the sixth. Hultink reached on an error, scored on a Warn RBI single, and Dylan Pawenski hit a two-run homer to left center, leveling the score at 7-7.

The game remained tied until the ninth inning when Davenport surged ahead with five runs. Liford singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a double from Julian Contreras. Sam Clay singled to bring home Contreras. Errors allowed Wyatt Epple and Justin Johnson to score, with Johnson hitting a two-run homer to seal the inning. Davenport then held UMSL scoreless in their half to secure a 12-7 victory.

Carson Anthes pitched four innings, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and issuing no walks while striking out none in the no-decision. Joe Chrapliwy contributed one inning of relief, recording two strikeouts and surrendering one earned run on one hit. Gabe Helder delivered 2 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and striking out three, while maintaining a WHIP of 0.45. Brandon Skorupski pitched a perfect 1/3 inning, throwing two pitches, both for strikes, and earning the win. Jimmy Amptmann closed with one scoreless inning, allowing no hits and forcing a double play, despite issuing two walks in the ninth.

Clay contributed with two hits, including a double, and scored twice while also adding an RBI. Johnson recorded a home run, driving in two runs and scoring once himself. Pawenski delivered a strong performance with two hits, a home run, and two RBIs, crossing the plate twice. Aiden Warn added one hit and an RBI, and he was hit by a pitch while scoring two runs. Liford went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Contreras also had a pair of hits including the winning RBI.

Looking ahead, Davenport will travel to face Illinois-Springfield at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 6 in Springfield, Illinois to begin a four-game series with the Prairie Stars.
