Panthers drop series finale at No. 7 Grand Valley State 8-2

ALLENDALE, Mich. — Davenport dropped the final three games of the weekend series to No. 7 Grand Valley State with a final score of 8-2 on Sunday. Davenport's two runs came in the second inning, but it was unable to score again. Despite the loss, the team managed eight hits, including two doubles. The Lakers secured the win with consistent scoring, including a three-run fourth inning and two-run bursts in the fifth and sixth innings.

Davenport's matchup against GVSU saw early scoring from both sides. In the second inning, Wyatt Epple singled to left field and scored on Ben Korson's double to right center. Korson then scored on Cody Hultink's single to center field, giving Davenport a 2-1 lead through two innings. Hultink missed over a month due to injury and it was his first hit since March 8.

However, the Lakers responded in the fourth inning. After loading the bases, Noah Brandt scored on a groundout. Evan Morrison's single to right field brought in two more runs, putting the Lakers ahead 4-2 after four innings.

Grand Valley State extended its lead in the fifth inning. Jovan Gill scored on a bases-loaded walk, and Caleb Estrada followed with another walk that scored a run, making it 6-2 off Jaden Alberson

In the sixth inning, Morrison tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. Josh Fleming, after reaching base, scored on a groundout, increasing the lead to 8-2.

Davenport was unable to produce additional runs, and the game concluded with the Lakers securing an 8-2 victory over Davenport.

Ian Dixon started on the mound for Davenport, pitching 3 1/3 innings while allowing four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Brayden Flanders relieved Dixon, pitching one inning, giving up two earned runs on one hit, and walking two batters. Aidan Arbaugh contributed with 1/3 of an inning, recording one strikeout and allowing one hit. Alberson and Lucas Coll each pitched briefly, with Coll striking out one in his inning of work while allowing two earned runs. Gabe Helder closed the game for Davenport, delivering two innings, striking out two and giving up two hits without allowing any runs.

Justin Johnson recorded three hits, including a double, showcasing his effectiveness at the plate. Epple contributed with two hits and scored a run, adding depth to the offense. Korson added a double and drove in a run.

Up next for Davenport, the team will travel to face Northwood at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 28 in Midland, Michigan.
