Panthers Rewrite Record Book, Take Two from Roosevelt

ROSEMONT, Ill. — A record-setting day on the base paths turned into a milestone-filled sweep for Davenport softball on Saturday.

The Panthers swiped seven bases in a doubleheader sweep of Roosevelt — setting a new NCAA-era single-game program record while tying the overall mark from the 2010 NAIA season. Hannah Tahaney added her 100th career strikeout in the circle, while Kailyne Luna led the offense with five hits on the day.

Behind that all-around effort, Davenport picked up a pair of wins, taking game one 6-5 before rallying for a 7-5 extra-inning victory in game two to improve to 8-24 overall and 4-6 in GLIAC play.

Game 1
DU jumped in front early and held off a late push to secure the opener. In the second inning, Sydney Drenth delivered a two-run single, and another run scored on a Roosevelt error to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.

The Panthers added on in the fourth as Randi Robakowski crossed home on a throwing error before Luna ripped an RBI triple to extend the advantage to 6-3. Roosevelt answered with two runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to one, but Davenport's defense held firm over the final two innings to preserve the win.

Tahaney earned the victory in the circle, striking out seven across six innings while allowing three earned runs on six hits. Kayla Widner closed out the game in relief as the Panthers combined for eight strikeouts.

Robakowski scored twice and swiped two bases, while Drenth drove in a pair. Luna paced the offense with two hits, including a triple and an RBI, while Chloe Bruman, Alaina Schwanke, Ally Prasnjak, Robakowski and Drenth each added a hit as Davenport totaled seven in the win.

Game 2
Roosevelt grabbed early control in the eveningcap, scoring three runs in the second inning and adding two more in the fourth to build a 5-1 lead.

Davenport began to chip away before delivering its biggest moment in the seventh. Luna sparked the rally with a clutch two-run double, and Schwanke followed with a two-run single to tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.

In the eighth, The Panthers capitalized once again on a Roosevelt miscue as Drenth scored the go-ahead run. Luna added another RBI on a groundout to bring home Lexie McCarty for insurance, and Schwanke shut the door in the bottom half to secure the 7-5 victory and complete the sweep.

Luna led the Panthers with three hits and three RBIs, while Clark and Robakowski each added two hits. Lyla Reynolds, Schwanke, and Grace Gilbert also recorded hits as Davenport totaled 10 in the win. Schwanke also went the distance in the circle, tossing all eight innings while striking out four to secure the victory.
