UTICA, Mich. — Davenport (28-25) fell to No. 7 Grand Valley State (44-8) with a final score of 18–6 at UWM Field in a battle of 2-0 teams in the GLIAC Tournament on Saturday morning. Despite the loss, Davenport is still alive in the GLIAC Tournament and will now face Wayne State at 8:30 PM to stay alive and play on Sunday, May 10.
Cody Hultink started the game strong for Davenport with a double to left center.
Justin Johnson followed with a walk, and
Aiden Warn brought in Hultink with a single to right field, putting Davenport on the board early. However, the Lakers responded with a powerful offensive display, including a three-run homer by Jovan Gill and a three-run shot by Evan Morrison, to take an 8–1 lead after the first inning.
Colton Blankstrom lasted just 1/3 of an inning and gave up two home runs and five earned runs.
Davenport went scoreless in the second inning, while GVSU extended its lead with a sacrifice fly from Josh Fleming and a run scored on a wild pitch, making it 10–1 by the end of the second inning.
In the fifth inning, Hultink homered to left center, and Johnson scored on consecutive wild pitches, adding two runs for Davenport. Despite the effort, the Lakers countered with three runs of its own, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Fleming, bringing the score to 14–3 through five innings.
Davenport managed to add another run in the seventh inning when
Julian Contreras doubled and later scored on a groundout by Johnson, but GVSU added four runs, including a two-run homer by Jake Skaggs, pushing the score to 18–4.
In the eighth,
Parker Neel scored on a single by
Wyatt Epple after reaching third on a wild pitch. Despite this, Davenport trailed 18–5 heading into the final inning.
Davenport added one more run in the ninth inning with Hultink doubling and scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Alec Wojahn.
Aidan Arbaugh relieved Blankstrom, pitching 2 2/3 innings while giving up five earned runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Gage Vota followed, surrendering four earned runs on three hits over two innings, also allowing three walks and one home run.
Jimmy Amptmann pitched two innings, conceding four earned runs on five hits, including two home runs.
Cam Johnson closed with a scoreless inning, issuing one walk and striking out one.
Hultink led the Davenport squad by scoring three runs and collecting four hits.
Wyatt Epple contributed with two hits and one RBI during the game. Warn added to the scoring with one hit and one RBI. Contreras made an impact with a double and scored one run.
