Panthers Sweep Lions, Extend Home Set Streak to 30

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Davenport swept Purdue Northwest 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 on Saturday, extending its streak to 30 consecutive sets won at home. The Panthers have yet to drop a set to the Lions on their home court. 

Davenport finished with 44 kills to Purdue Northwest's 31, served eight aces and held a 55-44 advantage in digs.

The Lions led 7-5 early in the opening set before a service error gave Davenport the ball. Keira Dommer then served three straight aces to put the Panthers ahead 9-7. The teams were tied at 15 before Davenport found separation behind kills from Karley Pretzer, Jaide Wirth and Abby Alan. Mariya Montgomery added a kill and combined with Wirth for a block, while Maddie Albright served an ace during the closing stretch. Wirth and Alan delivered the final two kills in a 25-18 set win.

DU opened the second set with a 5-1 lead, but Purdue Northwest worked its way back and went ahead 17-14. The Panthers answered by winning six of the next seven points. Alan started the response with consecutive kills, Pretzer followed with two more, and Savanah Weathers put down a kill to give Davenport a 20-18 lead.

The Lions briefly moved back in front, 21-20, before Davenport answered again. A block by Pretzer and Montgomery and another Pretzer kill helped the Panthers take a 23-22 lead. Purdue Northwest tied the set at 23, but an attack error gave Davenport set point, and Wirth finished a set from Dommer to secure the 25-23 win.

The third set stayed close throughout. Davenport recovered from a 10-7 deficit to tie it at 11 on a block by Alan and Amelia Werner. Werner later scored on back-to-back points to pull the Panthers even at 14, and Pretzer followed with a kill to give Davenport the lead.

After falling behind 16-15, the Panthers won five of the next six points to move ahead 20-17. The Lions rallied to tie the set at 20, but Pretzer answered with a kill. Wirth and Alan added kills down the stretch, Julia Frederick served an ace, and Alan put away match point to complete the sweep, 25-22.

Wirth led the Panthers with 12 kills while hitting .529. Alan added 10 kills and nine digs, Hayley Carr recorded 19 digs, and Dommer finished with 22 assists and three service aces.
