ST LOUIS, Mo. - The D2 Hockey team finished off a perfect weekend with a 10-6 victory over Kentucky on Sunday. The Panthers outscored their three Showcase opponents by the margin of 20-10 as they will now take on Indiana University next weekend.
The Panthers offense was on fire in the opening 20 minutes of the game as they put five goals past the Wildcat net-minder. Depth has been huge for DU early on this season and it proved no different on Sunday as all five goals were scored by different players.
Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.) started the onslaught as DU also got tallies from Jesse Carter (Amherst, Ontario), Bobby Collar (Brighton, Mich.), Aaron Warsen (Kentwood, Mich.) and Jonathon Frank (Wallingford Conn.).
After leading 5-0 after one, the Panthers let off a little in the second and allowed Kentucky to get within three at 7-4 but the offense continued to be dominate scoring three more times before the night was over.
Other goal scorers by DU were Brit Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario), Marc Thompson (Traverse City, Mich.) and Ben Dykstra (Kentwood, Mich.).
Anthony Petrak (Byron Center, Mich.) got the win in net and recovered well after a tough second period. Petrak is now 1-1 on the year as he helped DU to their fifth straight win after dropping their opening two games.
Thompson ended the weekend with five goals in just two games as he has been the main offensive weapon for the Panthers as they play without reigning All-American Adam Thomas (Kentwood, Mich.).
DU will take its 5-2 record to Bloomington, Ind. this weekend as they will take on old GMHL foe and now ACHA D1 Indiana University.
