Double Trouble: Panthers Sweep Roosevelt

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - It was a very successful weekend for the Davenport ACHA Division I men's hockey team as they climbed to 17 wins on the season with a pair of victories against Roosevelt University in GL6 action. The Panthers skated at home on Friday night and scored a season-high 11 goals while only allowing three. The teams shifted venues on Saturday, but the result was still the same, albeit a little closer, to the tune of 4-3 at the Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, Illinois.

Davenport had a steady offensive rhythm in Friday night's blowout with three goals in the first, four goals in the second, and four more goals in the third. The Panthers recorded 64 shots on goal compared to 19 for the Lakers, including 21-4 in the third period. Kyler Lowden stopped 14 shots in goal and Paul Jarvis got his first playing time of the season finishing the final 7:40 and making a pair of saves. Luke Mikkola recorded a four-point night with two goals and two assists. Brendan Bauer recorded a hat trick and also had a helper. Bryan Fenlon assisted on three goals. Jake Alton scored the team's lone power play goal in the first period at 6:39. Ryder McMillen, Matthew Carlson, and Sammy Mielock also registered a goal and assist.

Roosevelt put up more of a fight on Saturday night on their home ice. Carlson got the scoring started at 1:24 of the first period for his 10th goal of the season from Robert McLaughlin. Mike Abrego tied the game for RU on the power play at 1:01 of the second period. Jack Kelly gave DU a 2-1 lead at 18:37 with his 12th goal of the season from Mikkola. The third period was certainly the most entertaining as the Lakers built a 3-2 lead at the 14:39 mark as Abrego scored his second goal of the contest. The Panthers answered just over a minute later as Alton tied the game with an assist from Peter Stojcevski. Kelly won it for DU at 18:48 on the power play with Stojcevski getting an assist.

Davenport once again had a ton of shots on goal with 56. Harber Cassel did a great job in net for Roosevelt with 52 saves, while Lowden would end up with 25 saves to get the win. The Panthers are currently fifth in the GL6 standings with a record of four wins, six losses and one overtime loss for 13 points. The Lakers moved to 0-8 in the conference this season.

The Panthers have two more regular-season games this week before the GL6 Tournament begins on Feb. 17. DU will host Calvin on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 3:00 PM and Aquinas on Sunday at 2:00 PM for senior day.
