BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After the Davenport University Panther's dominated the ACHA DI Indiana University Hoosiers with a convincing 10-2 win Friday night. The Panthers stepped back on the ice 14 hours later for the second game in the two game series and lacked focus in a 9-5 defeat.
The Panther's have dominated the series over the past several years including beating IU 5-2 to win their first national championship in March of 2008.
This afternoon proved to be more of a challenge than Davenport expected or unfortunately gave them credit for.
IU opened the scoring in the first period with three unanswered goals before the Panthers found the back of the net on a shot from Brit Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) assisted by Paul Ziemke (Caledonia, Mich.) and Ben Dykstra (Kentwood, Mich.).
In the second, the Panthers cut the lead to one when Ouellette scored his second of the game and fifth of the weekend on a nice feed from linemate Ziemke.
The Hoosiers, on the day of their big homecoming, fired back with four more unanswered goals to extend their lead to 7-2. The Panthers did not go down easy when they responded with three more of their own to cut the lead to 7-5. Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.) recorded two and Kevin Brojek (Sterling Heights, Mich.) put Davenport back into the game.
Bad defensive play and untimely penalties allowed IU to extend their lead to four. The Panthers pulled their netminder Jacob Schira (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) who replaced starting tender Anthony Petrak (Byron Center, Mich.) to try to spark some offense.
The Panthers found out that when you only play 15 minutes of a 60 minute game you are going to lose a lot of games.
The penalty filled game was not the style of game the Panthers have had most success with. In all of Davenport's wins this year they have been extremely disciplined, but Saturday that was not the case.
Davenport outshot the Hoosiers 47-23 but struggled defensively and gave up five power play goals. The Panthers powerplay has been inconsistent lately and their one power play goal came on ten tries.
Davenport faces off next weekend October 23/24 with a home and home series against ACHA DI Eastern Michigan. Saturday Night's Home Game will be at Patterson Ice Center at 7:00 PM.
The Panthers are currently 6-3 on the season including 5-0 versus their ACHA DII competitors.
