GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The 2009 Homecoming game for Davenport proved to be a low scoring affair as the host Panthers notched all three goals in a 3-0 shutout over Grand Valley State. DU improves to 1-2 on the year as they have now defeated the Lakers eight straight times.
In the first of four games in the 2009-2010 Cross Town Clash Series, the Panthers scored three goals in the final two periods to pick up their first win of the year.
The first period started out with quite a bit of hitting as both teams had early opportunities but the two goaltenders were up to the task. Davenport ended the first outshooting GVSU 14-8 as the two teams went into first intermission scoreless.
After finishing the first with a flurry of shots, DU came out on fire again and got one by the GVSU net-minder when newcomer Marc Thompson (Traverse City, Mich.) notched his first goal of his DU career at the 1:01 mark on an assist by CJ Pobur (Commerce Twp., Mich.).
The Panthers extended their lead just 2:25 later when Brit Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) took a long pass from Jeremy Barber (Caledonia, Mich.) and put it past GVSU's Grant Lyon.
The defense for the Panthers may have been the biggest story of the second period as they allowed only seven shots on net as Scott Knight (Grand Rapids, Mich.) stopped them all.
The third period became more of a talking and penatly filled 20 minutes as the play was dominated by each team getting guys thrown in the box. DU did manage to get a late unassisted goal from Ben Dykstra (Kentwood, Mich.) for the final outcome.
The win lifts DU to 1-2 on the year as they will meet the Laker again on Saturday night at Georgetown Ice Arena in Hudsonville. Game time is set for an 8:00 puck drop.
