HUDSONVILLE, Mich. - For the second night in a row, the Panthers defense stepped up big against cross-town rival Grand Valley and the offense notched six goals as the Panthers defeated the Lakers 6-2 in Hudsonville. DU is now 2-2 on the year as Scott Knight got his second straight win in net.
After posting a 3-0 shutout in the annual homecoming game on Friday night, DU entered the Saturday contest looking to complete the sweep of their GMHL rivals. The Panthers got off to a fast start when Ben Dykstra (Kentwood, Mich.) scored at 14:23 with DU shorthanded on a great pass from Jeremy Barber (Caledonia, Mich.)
After a Laker goal on a power play tied the score, DU added two more goals in the opening period with one from Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.) at 6:07 and Marc Thompson (Traverse City, Mich.) at 5:18. Both late goals came as the two teams played 4 on 4 hockey.
Scoring was very limited in the second period, but DU did add to their lead when Thompson put up his second of the night just 4:31 in and the defense from Jared Mailloux (Amherstburg, Ontario) and Jon Stolarz (Grand Haven, Mich.) stood out as the period came to a close.
The Lakers came out strong in the third period and added their second power play goal of the night at the 17:24 mark to make things a little bit interesting, but the Panthers came back just 1:06 later and got a 4 on 4 goal from Barber assisted by Bobby Collar (Brighton, Mich.).
Davenport added a late goal as McWhorter notched his second of the night on a rebound goal for the final outcome of 6-2.
DU outshot the Lakers 40-32 as Scott Knight (Grand Rapids, Mich.) picked up his second win in as many nights.
Davenport will hit the road for their next six games beginning with a trip to St. Louis for the D2 Showcase where they will take on Missouri State, Colorado State and Kentucky.
