BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport, in search of their 5th straight GMHL crown, opened league play tonight with a convincing 11-3 win in Big Rapids over Ferris State. The victory lifts DU to 9-3 on the year with a second GMHL contest on Friday at home against Michigan State at 8:00 PM.
Davenport, making their annual Thursday night trip before Halloween to Big Rapids to face Ferris State, posted an impressive 11-3 win at Ewigleben Ice Arena.
Bobby Collar (Brighton, Mich.) and Jared Mailloux (Amherstburg, Ontario) each scored a goal in the opening perod to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
The flood gates then opened for the Davenport offense in the second period as DU posted five goals while allowing zero as they took a 7-0 lead into the 2nd intermission.
Scoring for Davenport were Jesse Carter (Amherstburg, Ontario), Phillip Tesoriero (Boulder, Colo.), Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.), Jonathon Frank (Wallingford, Conn.) and Ben Dykstra (Kentwood, Mich.).
The Bulldog netminder was pulled in favor of the back up but the third period was not much different for the host team as DU put up four more goals finishing with 11 on the night.
Ben Dykstra added two more goals to give him the hat-trick on the night and Jon Stolarz (Grand Haven, Mich.) and Brit Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) each added a goal as well.
Scott Knight (Grand Rapids, Mich.) earned the win in net to give him a 6-0 record heading into a big matchup with the Spartans of Michigan State on Friday at Patterson Ice Center. Game time is set for 8:00 PM between the GMHL rivals.
