Cross Town Clash Weekend Preview

Panthers and Lakers continue annual rivalry despite DU's move to D1

Listen Live | Live Stats

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport and Grand Valley renew the "Cross Town Clash" rivalry this weekend at Georgetown on Friday and Patterson on Saturday. Despite the move to ACHA D1 for DU, the two teams will continue their two game series.

The Panthers face off this weekend against a familiar foe, cross town clash rival Grand Valley State University. This will mark the first time the Panthers have played against a Division II opponent since they swept Central Michigan on the opening weekend. Over the past couple of seasons, the close rivals have played some great games and this weekend will be no different.

In the history of the rivalry which spans 8 years and 24 games, the Panthers hold an 18-4-2 advantage over the Lakers. Before a loss to GVSU in GMHL play last season, Davenport had won 9 straight meetings with their rival.

GVSU is led up front by Ryan Welch and former Davenport Panther CJ Pobur. Pobur switched sides in the off season to pursue a degree at Grand Valley. Pobur also moved from defense to forward for the Lakers and it is paying off as he has two goals and six assists, good enough for second on the team in scoring. Bradley Keough leads the Lakers with five goals on the season.

Grand Valley is led all around by their goaltender Grant Lyon. Grant has been a very solid goalie over the past couple seasons and has not let down this season. Lyon has a 2.60 GAA and a 92% save average. Grant is very good in net and will look to try and keep the Lakers in the game and keep it close against Davenport's high scoring offense.

Both night's the games will be broadcast live on the DAN and live stats starting at 9:00 pm on Friday and 7:15 pm on Saturday. Click the link at the top of the page for more information.

Keys to the game:

  • Do not get caught up in the rivalry, play our game
  • Use our speed and puck control abilities, do not give the puck to GVSU
  • Be aggressive in all zones, do not give the Lakers time to make decisions
  • If the chance is there, blow it open do not let them stick around
  • Pick corners and put away rebounds. Lyon is good, he will not give up weak goals
