NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The first road game of the year resulted in exactly what the previous eight home games did for DU as the 11th ranked Panthers picked up a convincing 82-51 win at Holy Cross (Ind.). Five players posted double-digits for the 9-0 Panthers who will host UM-Dearborn on Wednesday in the conference opener for both schools.
Playing without third leading scorer
James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had no ill effect on the Panthers as they were led by five different players in double-digits led by
Nathan Cox's 15 off the bench. Red-shirt freshman
JaVontae Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.) continued his solid play as the forward contributed 13 also off the bench for head coach
Burt Paddock.
The Saints played solid for the opening 5:30 of the game and held a slim 8-7 advantage but on the next possession, DU got a bucket from
Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) and it fueled a 12-3 run to give DU a 20-11 lead with 9:46 remaining. The run was finished with a three ball from Ford forcing the home Saints into a timeout.
Davenport continued its solid play over the remainder of the first half as they scored 22 of the final 30 points to take commanding 42-19 lead at the intermission. Eight different Panthers posted at least four points during the opening 20 minutes.
The second half was much more of the same from the two teams with Davenport controlling the play extending their lead to as many as 33 late in the game while every player on the DU bench was able to get post at least three minutes of game action.
Jamie Canty (Chicago, Ill.),
James Nelson (New Haven, Mich.) and
Zach Yeagy (Alexandria, Ind.) joined Cox and Ford in double-digits as they all chipped in with 10 points repectively. Other stat leaders for the Panthers were
Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) with 8 rebounds,
Lonnie Fairfax (Detroit, Mich.) with 5 assists and
JaVontae Ford with 5 steals.
Davenport (9-0 overall) will be at home for the WHAC opener on Wednesday, December 1 when they welcome UM-Dearborn to the Student Center. Game time is set for 7:30 pm and will be broadcast on the DAN starting at 7:10pm.
