Grand Rapids, Mich. – After opening the season 10-0, the Panthers have lost two of their last three games, including a 97-80 loss to Concordia on Saturday. Davenport hung tough but couldn't convert enough shots and saw Concordia go a perfect 14 of 14 from the free throw line down the stretch to get the upset win. The Panthers will get a break from conference action when they host Kalamazoo College next Friday.

The Cardinals got off to a quick start against Davenport as they hit a pair of three-pointers and made a layup to get off to an early 8-2 lead.

A dunk by James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) tied the game with 12:27 remaining in the first half and then two long balls by Gabe VanderJagt (Rockford, Mich.) on the next two possessions gave Davenport a 21-15 lead. Vanderjagt posted 6 of his 9 points in the first half with all of his points coming from behind the arc.

Concordia battled back and with 5:24 remaining in the first half and took a 25-26 lead that they wouldn't give up.

A 6-0 run late in the first half by Davenport tied the game at 35 but Concordia closed with seven straight points to post a 42-35 halftime lead.

After being down by as many as 10 in the opening minutes of the second half, Davenport climbed their way back to a four point deficit with 13:00 minutes remaining after James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) made a pair of free throws. Humphrey led the Panthers with 15 points and also grabbed 8 rebounds.

It looked as if Davenport would make the comeback getting within one on a couple of occasions but couldn't make a big stop on the defensive end. Concordia would close out the game making 14 consecutive free throws for the 80-97 win.

Marius Williams (Concordia), who was named the WHAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week, set the pace for the Cardinals with 18 points, 11 assists, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals. Rocko Holmes had 22 points and 8 rebounds and John Schaeffer had 18 points for the Cardinals.

Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) (13), Zach Yeagy (Alexandria, Ind.) (11), and James Nelson (New Haven, Mich.) (10) all scored in double-digits for the Panthers. Nelson also grabbed 8 rebounds in the loss.

The loss is the Panthers first to Concordia under head coach Burt Paddock and is just the fourth loss in 34 games for the Panthers at the DU Student Center with the only other regular season losses coming to conference rivals Aquinas and Cornerstone.

The 97 points scored by the Cardinals also is the most given up under a Burt Paddock coached team at Davenport since he started in 2008-09.

Davenport will play Kalamazoo College next Friday at 7:00 pm. This will be the last chance to see the Panthers at home until after the holidays as they will have a game at IU-South Bend and the Warner University Holiday Tournament before returning home on January 5th to play Marygrove College.
