Ford Scorches Hornets for 24 Points in Panthers 83-59 Win over Kalamazoo

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Davenport completed their season sweep of NCAA Division III opponents tonight by defeating Kalamazoo College 83-59. JaVontae Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.) went 6-7 from behind the arc en route to 24 points to lead the #19 ranked Panthers. Davenport will travel to Indiana University-South Bend on December 22 before playing in the Warner University Holiday Tournament in Lake Wales, FL after Christmas.

Davenport went up early on a layup by Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) to give Davenport a 6-2 lead. A few minutes later, DU would go on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 20-10 with 12:51 remaining in the game. Nathan had 14 points on the night while going a perfect 4-4 from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line.

A quick 4-0 run late in the first half gave the Panthers an 18 point lead which was the largest lead in the half. After seeing the Hornets score four straight to end the half, the Panthers took a 40-26 lead into the locker room.

In the first half the Panthers outscored Kalamazoo 20-8 in the paint and 11-7 off the bench. Kalamazoo scored 9 points off of Davenport turnovers while the Panthers converted the Hornet turnovers into only 7 points.

JaVontae Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.) hit two of his six three pointers on back to back possessions early in the second half to increase the Panthers lead to 20 with 14:53 remaining in the second half. Ford finished with a career high 24 points to go along with 5 rebounds, and tied for a team high with 4 steals. The 24 points were 10 more than his previous high of 14.

Kalamazoo wouldn't go away though as they hit back to back three's to bring them to within 12 at 58-46 with 10:58 remaining in the second half.

Davenport countered with a 20-4 run to extend their lead to 28, a lead that Kalamazoo wouldn't be able to come back from.

James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) scored 12 points and added 3 blocks for the Panthers. Kale Waaso (South Haven, Mich.)led the team in rebounds with 7 and in assists with 5.

Davenport will take on Indiana University-South Bend in a non-conference game on December 22nd. Davenport will then travel to Lake Wales, FL for the Warner University Holiday Inn Express Invitational The Panthers first opponent will be Grace College (Ind.) and will play either Warner University or Roberts Wesleyan on the second day.
