SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A 16 point second half deficit was too much to overcome as #19 Davenport fell 62-56 to host Indiana University of South Bend on Wednesday night. The loss is the third in their last five games for the Panthers and they will resume play in Florida against Grace College (Ind.) on Dec. 29.
Playing in their final game before the Christmas holiday, Davenport was unable to get past a scrappy Titans squad of the CCAC. The loss drops Davenport to 12-3 on the year as the Panthers got a team high 17 points from senior
Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.).
Host IUSB came out hot and posted a halftime lead of 37-27 when they hit a deep three-pointer with less then three seconds remaining in the first half. The Titans shot 52% from the floor and hit 5 shots from behind the arc for the 10-point margin.
South Bend then opened the second half on an 8-2 run to open a 45-29 lead with 15 minutes to play in the game and eventually held a 51-36 lead with 6:30 to play. The intensity for the Panthers finally picked up at that point and DU used an 18-1 run to take a 54-52 lead with 3:20 on the clock.
The Panthers used two huge dunks from
James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and
Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) to post their first lead since the first few minutes of the game but IUSB countered with seven straight points to take a 59-54 lead with just under a minute to play. A Cox layup brought it to a one possession game but the Titans responded with a layup of their own and one more FT in the final seconds to preserve the upset.
Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) led Davenport with 17 points as
James Humphrey (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and
JaVontae Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.) chipped in 15 and 10 points respectively. DU finished the game with 21 turnovers and only 7 assists.
#19 Davenport will take part in the Warner University Holiday Tournament from December 29-30 and they open the tourney with a matchup against #17 Grace College (Ind.).
