GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport's D2 hockey team has spent five years in the GMHL and after tonight's 7-3 win over Michigan, the Panthers have won the regular season title each time. DU will look to make it a perfect sweep of the regular season and tournament crowns in early March in East Lansing.
After easily defeating the Wolverines on Friday night 9-2 at Patterson, the Panthers traveled across to Ann Arbor and the defensive intensity led to some easy goals as they posted the season sweep with the 7-3 win.
Scoring the goals for Davenport were Adam Thomas (Kentwood, Mich.) with two goals and Jeff Slusser (Kentwood, Mich.), Brandon Davis (Hartland, Mich.), Marc Thompson (Traverse City, Mich.), Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.) and Adam Gillikin (Canton, Mich.) with one each.
Cam Thomas (Kentwood, Mich.) got the win in net for the Panthers as he is now 5-0 on the year in net.
Davenport will be the #1 seed in the upcoming GMHL Tournament hosted by Michigan State from March 5-6 and they will take on the 8th seed Michigan in the quarterfinals on Friday the 5th.
Davenport and Central Michigan will play a home and home series next weekend for the final games of the regular season. DU will celebrate senior night on Friday the 19th with the puck set to drop shortly after 8:00 PM.
