ROCHESTER, Mich. - Davenport's March Thompson scored the lone goal in the shootout as Scott Knight stopped all shots he faced as the Panthers downed the Grizzlies 3-2 (1-0 shootout) to retain the Good Luck Duck for the 3rd straight season. DU is now 25-14 with four regular season games remaining.
After scoring eight combined goals in the first two games, the two teams focused more on the defensive end on Saturday night as DU took a 1-0 lead after the first. Oakland would rally to tie the game in the middle of the second.
The Panthers, looking to win back to back games in the series after dropping the opener on Thursday, got a big goal late in the second period to take a 2-1 lead.
The host Grizzlies continued to battle though and tied the game sending it into overtime. After a scoreless overtime, the two teams went to a shootout where is was all about DU netminder Scott Knight (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
The fifth year goaltender stopped all shots he faced and Marc Thompson (Traverse City, Mich.) scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Panthers won 3-2 (1-0 shootout).
Davenport is now 24-14 on the year as they will wrap up GMHL play on Friday and Saturday when they face Michigan. A win in either of the two games will clinch at least a share of their 5th straight regular season championship. A sweep gives them the title outright.
