GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Playing with just 11 players against Calvin's 12, DU put up a great fight today but fell one goal short in an 8-7 loss to the Knights. Davenport, which trailed 4-3 at halftime, ends their 2010 season with a 4-11 overall mark.
Calvin came into the game in the second spot in the WCLL (Northwest Division) behind front-runner Aquinas at 5-1 took the early 1-0 lead just less than 5:00 into the game.
Davenport came right back with three straight goals in a span of 4:08 from
Kendra Stieg (Reed City, Mich.),
Jessica Talcott (Ada, Mich.) and
Valerie Carr (Holt, Mich.) to take a 3-1 advantage.
That would be their last goals of the first half as the Knights rallied with three unanswered goals to end the opening 30 minutes to take a 4-3 lead.
The second half, which continued amongst a downpour, saw DU tie the game in the opening minutes on Stieg's second goal of the game. After Calvin again took the lead, the Lady Panthers scored twice in a row from Helena Stieg (Reed City, Mich.) and Kendra Stieg to take a 6-5 lead.
Again Calvin countered with a goal to tie the game but DU got a fourth goal from Kendra Stieg with 13:43 remaining to go up one at 7-6.
Calvin's defense then took control as they shut down DU and allowed their offense to get two goals on the board for the win.
Kansas Beute (Hudsonville, Mich.) finished the game with 3 saves as alot of the shots from Calvin were wide or high of the net.
DU ends their 3rd season at 4-11 overall.
