CANTON, Ohio -
Ashley Phillips scored for the second second time in the past three games and
MaryBeth McMillan picked up her first goal as a Panther as Davenport defeated Malone University 2-0 in Canton, Ohio. DU is now 3-0-1 on the season and will host Holy Cross (Ind.) on Saturday.
Playing on the road against an undefeated Malone squad had the Lady Panthers on their toes on Wednesday afternoon and the team was up to the task as they scored two first half goals in route to their third win of the season.
DU got on the board in just the 6th minute when
MaryBeth McMillan (Middlebury, Ind.) headed home a corner kick from
Thelma Gylfadottir (Akranes, Iceland) to put the Lady Panthers up 1-0. Gylfadottir then picked up her second assist just over a minute later when she found a streaking
Ashley Phillips (Stevensville, Mich.) up the sideline and the senior put the ball by the MU keeper to put DU on top 2-0.
Gylfadottir kept up the pressure and created a few more chances of her own to increase the lead but could not get the ball past the Malone keeper and the score remained 2-0 headed into halftime.
Both defenses stood out in the second half as the offense for Malone picked up and created some good chanced but DU keeper
Jessica Bergsma (Jenison, Mich.) was up to the task as the freshman finished with five saves and was able to post her second shutout of the year.
Davenport will be at home on Saturday when they welcome Holy Cross to the Turf Field for a 12:30 kickoff. The game will be broadcast live on the DAN and will also be viewable through Game Central's Live Stats.

Chris Allen, DU Head Coach
On his team's hard work
"We are very proud of how hard the team worked to get this result against a tough team who plays in a strong conference. A lot of players got good minutes again and a couple players returned well from injuries. Malone looks as though they will do well this year and beating them was a sign that we are getting stronger. We played some great football at times"
