GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - No. 13 Davenport and No. 25 Indiana Tech combined to score the fewest points in DU Student Center history, as the Panthers prevailed 55-45 on Wednesday night. The win increases the Panthers record to 20-4 on the season and 7-3 in WHAC play.
In a tight back-and-forth game, Kale Waaso (South Haven, Mich.) broke open the game with his own personal 8-0 run 11 minutes into the second half to make the score 44-35 in favor of the Panthers. Waaso got hot as he hit a jump shot and then back-to-back 3-pointers, with the second coming from way behind the 3-point line. The spurt forced the Warriors to take a timeout with 8:32 left in the game.
Indiana Tech tried to get back in the game, closing the gap to five on two different occasions late in the second half, but JaVontae Ford (Grand Rapids, Mich.) would put the game away when he stole a Warrior's pass and Indiana Tech fouled him to prevent the layup. Ford would make both free-throws to put the Panthers ahead 52-43 with 2:09 remaining. The Panthers knocked down their free-throws to close out the scoring.
A first half dominated by defense featured five ties as neither team could build more than a four point lead. The visiting Warriors would go into the locker room with a 25-23 lead after Clyde McKinney hit a long 3-pointer at the buzzer. For the first half, DU shot 27% from the field, while Indiana Tech could not do much better, shooting 35%.
The second half continued to see baskets hard to come by in the tight game, as the score was tied for a seventh time at 30-30 with 14:50 left in the game. The teams would trade baskets to make the score 36-35 Davenport at the 10:51 mark, before Waaso caught fire to put the game out of reach.
Nathan Cox (Flushing, Mich.) led all scorers with 19 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Panthers. Waaso finished with 10 in the game.
The Panthers tallied their 55 points on 36.2 percent shooting in the game, while the Warriors couldn't do much better at 36.7 percent from the field. DU's defense held the Warriors to 20 points in the second half.
The combined total points (100) were the fewest in DU Student Center history as the previous low was 101 back in 2009 when DU defeated Siena Heights 53-48.
The Panthers continue WHAC play when they welcome Siena Heights to the DU Student Center Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m., and the game will be aired live on the DAN.
