KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Panthers exploded for five second period goals, including a tally from senior Bobby Collar, who broke the all-time scoring mark at DU with the goal. Collar, who recorded four points in Saturday's win, combined with two on Friday, now has 342 points, which is three more than previous record holder Adam Thomas.
On Saturday, the Panthers were led offensively by freshman Kyle McDowell (Toronto, Ontario), who recorded a hattrick to ignite the Panther offense. The win lifts Davenport to 24-5 on the year and 11-2 in league action.
McDowell opened the scoring for DU, slamming home a nice pass from Ben Dykstra (Kentwood, Mich.) at the 11:38 mark of the first. The Stallions would respond, however, as WMU capitalized on a loose puck in the crease to poke it past netminder Phil Graveline (Marshall, Mich.). This goal seemed to motivate the Panthers as DU rattled off six straight goals before Western Michigan could respond with their second, and last, tally of the game. Collar scored a short-handed breakaway and Sean McWhorter (Lansing, Mich.) also posted his first of two on the evening to give DU a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
The second period featured Bobby Collar (Brighton, Mich.), who on his second goal of the evening, surpassed former point record holder Adam Thomas, with a goal just below the left faceoff dot that beat the WMU goaltender on the short side.
In his four previous seasons, Collar has recorded point totals of 48 (06-07), 79 (07-08), 83 (08-09) and a personal record 85 last season. Davenport has won three ACHA D2 National Titles in Bobby's four years and Collar will try and lead Team USA to a win in the World University Games later this month in Turkey.
The second period was capped off by goals from Dykstra, Jared Mailloux (Amherstburg, Ontario), McWhorter, and captain Brit Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario). On the few scoring chances WMU could muster, Phil Graveline was up to the task making each and every save. The Panthers out-shot the Stallions 23-8 in the second frame.
The Panthers picked up in the third period where the second left off, as McDowell netted his final two goals, securing the hattrick, while defender Brandon Davis (Hartland, Mich.) beat the opposing netminder short-side by slipping a wrister inside the post to complete the scoring.
Shots in the contest favored the Panthers by a count of 50-26 while Graveline upped his record to 14-1.
The Panthers finish their three game weekend with WMU tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 in Kalamazoo.
