LYNCHBURG, Va. - Davenport travelled to a hostile environment, Lynchburg, Virginia, to play rival Liberty University. After a scoreless first two periods, Davenport and Liberty each put up three goals in the third to send the game into overtime where a
Phil Wendecker goal won it for the Panthers. Davenport and Liberty will be in action again tomorrow at 7:30 pm.
Most of the games between the Panthers and the Flames are very close and always come down to the end. This game was no different. The Panthers and the Flames were scoreless after two periods, as sophomore net minder
Phil Graveline had stopped all 30 shots he had seen, and matching Graveline was Liberty goaltender Blair Bennett.
Liberty scored the first two goals in the third period as costly turnovers hurt the Panthers. Liberty's crowd was a real factor as the Panthers started to scramble.
DU was a little sloppy, but seemed to get it together. Down 2-0, Davenport started to pick up the pace and took the game to Liberty.
Bo Jacobs notched the first goal for DU on the night as he smacked home a rebound at the 13:27 mark.
After Jacobs received an excessive celebration penalty, it seemed to fire up DU as the Panthers were on the verge of one of their best penalty kills of the season.
Dustin Wischmeyer capped off the impressive kill with a nice wrap around goal to give DU their first shorthanded goal of the year, but tying the game at two.
Liberty would not go down easy and scored a power play goal from the top of the right circle to give the Flames the 3-2 lead.
The Panthers didn't panic as they had battled their way back before. Wischmeyer tied the game, with his second goal, as he put home a rebound off a shot from
Norm Farr to tie the game at three. "This is something we practice all the time and it is great to see. Norm hit a hard shot to the goalies outside pad and he kicked the rebound to Dustin's stick and he stuffed it home. You crash the net, you score goals" said coach
Phil Sweeney.
With overtime looming, the home team, Liberty, was awarded a 5-3 power play with 2:24 to go in the game.
Phil Graveline stepped up for DU, and made all the saves down the stretch to send the game into overtime.
In overtime the Panthers went on a 4-3 power play and
Phil Wendecker scored a huge goal from the top of the circles, past Bennets blocker side, to give Davenport a huge road win in a hostile environment. DU faces the Flames again at 7:30 EST on Saturday night in Lynchburg.
Post-Game Quotes
"We took a big step today as a team. When a team has the ability and confidence to battle back, it says something about the team. I am very proud of the guys today, as we were a little shorthanded with suspensions. They worked hard again, and we came away with a tough road win."
- Bill McSween
"Wendecker has done a great job so far as a leader of this team and it is great to see him score the game winner. He has worked hard, and it is showing, he played great today."
- Phil Sweeney
"Graveline was huge tonight. He made 47 saves to lead us to another victory. We strongly feel we have the best goalies in the country and tonight Graveline showed why we think that way. Some of the saves he made down the stretch were unreal."
- Joe Messina
