GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - A late rally that put Davenport in front 2-1 was not enough as a goal by the Falcons of Notre Dame with just under 10 minutes to play in regulation tied it and then the visitors posted the dramatic win with a free kick goal in the extra frame. The loss sends DU to 6-3-0 on the year as NDC improves to 4-1-0.
Davenport dug themselves an early hole on Saturday afternoon as the Falcons posted the first goal of the game in the 11th minutes on a beautiful cross and one touch by DU keeper
Catherine Howard. After a few chances just missed for Davenport, the score would remain 1-0 in favor of NDC heading into the locker room.
The Panthers came out with much more intensity in the second half and got the equalizer in the 69th minute when
Abbie Prince headed a ball into the back of the net off a perfect header put in by
Letesha Cannonier. The offense kept coming and just over six minutes later the two hooked up again this time with Prince sending the ball across and Cannonier put it away for a 2-1 Davenport lead.
The score looked as if it would hold up and Davenport would pick up their seventh win, but a defensive breakdown led to the game-tying goal with just under 10 minutes to play. Neither team posed much of a threat for the remainder and the game went into overtime.
Late in the first overtime, DU was on the wrong end of a un-timed yellow card that allowed the Falcons a free kick from just above the box and NDC's Lauren Acker put it by Howard for the game winner.
Post-Game Quotes - Head Coach
Chris Allen and Freshman
Abbie Prince
Allen on overall play of team - "To be totally honest I thought we did a lot of things well today. Notre dame were a great team and kudos to them. We still have to concentrate on certain areas defensively, although we are getting better, and we could have scored a couple more too. They keep getting better and that's what we expect. We are all looking forward to our final weekend of non conference action in Tennessee."
Prince on two big plays in the second half -
"The first was a great cross on a great header by Letesha and then the second one, I drew the defender out and Letesha was right there wide open in the middle of the box."
