GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - As both teams enter a very difficult part of their schedule, the Davenport basketball teams remain as the team to beat in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference with each staying put at No. 3 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Polls which were released Monday night.
The men's side has a new team atop the rankings for the first time since late December as Oregon Tech switched spots with previous No. 1 Northwood (Fla.). Davenport is just behind the two schools as the Panthers remain at No. 3 while garnering a pair of first place votes. It marks the second time this season DU has accumulated first place votes as the Panthers are currently 20-2 overall and 10-0 in league play.
Northwood, who had its 15-game winning streak halted with the loss, still earned four first-place votes and 329 points. Holding at No. 3, Davenport (Mich.) checked in with 328 total points. Fourth-ranked Grace (Ind.) tallied 301 points and No. 5 McPherson (Kan.) moved into the top five for the second time this year with 300 points.
On the women's side, the top six teams went unchanged with Indiana Wesleyan still gaining all 13 first place votes for the sixth consecutive week. Following the Wildcats are Briar Cliff (Iowa) and Davenport who will bring a 20-2, 10-0 mark into this week against Indiana Tech on Wednesday and Siena Heights (No. RV) on Saturday.
The Lady Panthers picked up a pair of wins last week as they held off rival Cornerstone in the school's first ever double-overtime game on Wednesday before soundly defeating UM-Dearborn on Saturday. DU, which has 323 points in the poll, sits just six behind BCU and 20 behind Wesleyan.
The men are on the road for both games this week while the women will host. All games can be seen or heard live on the Davenport Athletics Network (DAN).
