GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Coming off two home victories last week that gave it sole possession of first place of the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference standings, the Davenport women's soccer team hits the road for the final time in the regular-season as it plays at Concordia Wednesday at 4 p.m. followed by Madonna Saturday at noon.
The Lady Panthers, entering the week with a record of 12-2-0 overall, 5-0 in the WHAC, have been rewriting their record books this season. This 2012 they set single-season records in shutouts, wins, consecutive victories, points, goals and assists.
But as the end of the regular-season is near, the Lady Panthers, with three matches remaining, could add a WHAC regular-season championship to their history books Saturday.
Should Lady Panthers win their matches at Concordia and Cornerstone, they will clinch at least a share of the WHAC championship and can win it outright with a victory at home against Cornerstone Oct. 24.
Concordia enters Wednesday's match against Davenport still searching for a league win, going 0-3-1. Paige Beracy is the leading scorer for the Cardinals, having scored five of the 11 goals this season. While the Cardinals have scored 11 goals, a majority of them were without help as the Cardinals have only tallied two assists, with Olivia Amend given credit to both of them. Laura Beth Johnston has been the player between the posts all season, carrying a 2.04 goals-against average with 120 saves.
Madonna has had a respective season this year, entering the week with a 7-5-0 record overall and 3-1 in the WHAC. Before Davenport visits Livonia, the Crusaders will travel to Lawrence Tech Wednesday and will play the University of Detroit Friday. Ashley Parent and Katlyn Krysiak are the leading Crusaders with nine goals. Parent also leads the team in points (22) with Krysiak trailing her by one. Amanda Ferrick paces the Crusaders in the assists category with five. Blaire Schmalenberg has been the Crusaders keeper all season, maintaining a 1.41 GAA with 55 saves. Schmalenberg and Krysiak are the reigning WHAC Players of the Week for offense and defense, respectively.
