NAIA Top 25 Poll
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport women's soccer team will enter the final week of its historical regular-season back in the NAIA Top 25. After claiming at least a share of their first ever Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference championship last weekend, the now 25
th-ranked Lady Panthers will look to claim the crown outright and earn homefield advantage throughout the conference tournament Wednesday against second-place Cornerstone. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
The Lady Panthers checked backed into the top 25 for the first time since Sept 18, when for the first time in program history they were placed 21
st in the poll.
Davenport currently holds a 7-0 record in the WHAC while second-place Cornerstone and Indiana Tech are both 5-1. The Lady Panthers can secure the regular-season championship alone and earn the top seed in the tournament with a win or draw Wednesday, but a loss to the Golden Eagles can setup the possibility of a three-way tie for first.
While
Lizzie Paul and
Alyssa Malone found their scoring rhythm back last week, one continued to keep finding the back of the net as
Letesha Cannonier, who scored the eventual match-winner at Madonna last Saturday to give the Panthers the conference championship, has scored all six of her goals this season in the last eight matches.
The Lady Panthers continued to roll this month as they have reached eight straight victories to post 14 wins this season. In addition to adding on to those single-season records, the Lady Panthers also added on in goals (47) and assists (44) while posting their ninth shutout of the season at Concordia.
Head coach
Chris Allen's squad will be well challenged in their rematch against the Golden Eagles, who handed the Panthers their first loss of the season with a 3-1 victory in non-conference play back on Sept. 11. Recently, Cornerstone has been second hottest team in the WHAC, having won five straight since its loss to Indiana Tech. Maile Carigon has been the scoring leader with 17 points and eight goals but Amanda Van Laar and Kerri Hoffman have been real dangerous on the attack, tallying 34 shots overall, 20 in goal. Hoffman also leads the Golden Eagles in assists.
While this will be the final home match of the regular-season, the Lady Panthers will honor their six graduating senior class,
Kasey Eberlein,
Rickilyn Brummel,
Karitas Elvarsdottir,
Catherine Howard,
Alyssa Malone and
Ashley Roth, before kicking off the first round of the WHAC Tournament. Check back soon for more details.
