GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – It was a record day for the Davenport women's soccer team on a cloudy and chilly Saturday afternoon. Paige Eli scored two goals, Thelma Gylfadottir added one and an own goal carried the Panthers to a 4-0 Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference victory over newcomer Marygrove to set the program's shutout record of nine and achieve the all-time win No. 50 since the start of the program in 2006.

The Lady Panthers had control for a majority of the match, outshooting the Mustangs 17-5 and holding a 5-2 corner kick advantage. Gylfadottir led the shooting category with six followed by Lizzie Paul and Eli with three. Michelle Marcus made three saves in 80 minutes played between the posts while Lexi Kruse went the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.

The eventual match-winning goal came in the sixth minute. Letesha Cannonier's sent a cross from the left side and Mustang defender attempt to clear it accidentally went into their own net.

Eli put the match out of reach with her two goals in the first half. Her first goal came off a breakaway from a forward pass by Gylfadottir in the 27th minute and her second goal came in the 29th minute.

Following a Mustang goal kick in the 57th minute, Paul headed the ball back into the Mustangs zone where Gylfadottir was waiting alone to earn her fifth goal of the season inside the penalty box.

The Lady Panthers home stretch continues as they welcome crosstown rival Aquinas to DU Turf Field Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Post-Match Quotes – Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Marcus:

On the second half: “I think we got a little too comfortable with the lead that we had. Our defense still did a good job of handling everything. We allowed only three shots on goal and I'm so proud of them for that and we held that homefield shutout. Can't complain.”

On playing at home: “It's really nice. As much as I love being on the road and all of the bonding we do on the bus and being together all time, it is nice to have time to just be at home on our own field and get that home win again.”
