Box Score Sweeney Post-Game Interview
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Playing in their first close contest of the season, the twelfth-ranked Panthers used a pair of power play goals to get past the tenth-ranked Bronchos of Central Oklahoma.
Travis White and
Alex Ostrowski each scored goals while
Phil Graveline made 22 saves to help the Panthers improve to 4-0 on the season. Davenport will take on Illinois tomorrow afternoon in their final game in the ACHA D1 Showcase.
In the Panther's first three games this season, Davenport has been able to score early and often en route to three double-digit scoring games. But tonight's game was a different story.
After an evenly matched and scoreless opening period, the Panthers were able to get on the board 7:40 into the second period when
Travis White scored his first goal of the season. The power play goal was set up by
Robert Kleiman and
Matt Ogden who assisted on the play.
It took until midway through the third period before Davenport was able to get a little breathing room when Alek Ostrowski buried a second power play goal for the Panthers. AJ Frank and
Mason Bohlinger assisted on the goal.
Phil Graveline picked up his third win of the season in net for Davenport as he made 22 saves on 22 Central Oklahoma shots for the shutout.
A key to the Panthers win was their play on special teams. Davenport went 2-for-4 on the power play and prevented Central Oklahoma from scoring on all seven of their power play opportunities.
Davenport will take on Illinois tomorrow at 2:45 PM EST in their final game of the ACHA D1 Showcase in Springfield, Ill. Davenport lost to Illinois 4-2 last season in the showcase in the only previous meeting between these two teams.
Post-Game Quotes – Head Coach Phil Sweeney
On how team responded to first close game of the season – “We knew we were going to have a battle today, they just beat Lindenwood twice at Lindenwood, so we knew we were playing a good hockey team. They played really tough defensively and our guys just battled all game long and did all the little things you have to do to win.”
On the play of special teams – “Not only our power play but our penalty kill was great tonight too. They had six power plays and we only had four. We scored on two of our power plays and they went 0-for-6 and obviously that's a difference maker.”
