Women's Lax Opens 2012 Season Today

Lady Panthers will play in newly formed NWLL for league play

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's lacrosse team opens its first season as a varsity team today as they are in Tennessee to face Tennessee Wesleyan in part of a four game trip over spring break.  The team, under the direction of first year head coach Celeste Shefferly, is playing in the newly formed NWLL.

Celeste Shefferly takes over the reins of the women's lacrosse program at Davenport in the program's fourth year of competition.  Davenport will play in the newly formed NWLL (National Women's Lacrosse League) and four of those games happen this week in Tennessee and Georgia.

Joining Davenport in the league will be Aquinas, Missouri Baptist, Indiana Tech, Midland, Reinhardt, Robert Morris, SCAD, Shorter, Siena Heights and Tennessee Wesleyan.

Last season, Indiana Tech claimed the first ever league title but now new teams have joined this year as women's lacrosse continues to expand in the midwest.  DU will face six of their nine league opponents on the road with Robert Morris being the team's first home game on March 10.

Also coming to the Turf Field is Aquinas College and Missouri Baptist.

The team features six student-athletes who have played lacrosse at Davenport prior to this season led by attacker Michon Moline.  The junior led the team with 49 points last season (41 goals and 8 assists) and will be looked at to provide leadership to a team that is bringing in 13 new players.
