MARION, Ind. – On day two of the Indiana Wesleyan tournament Davenport squared off against the University of Saint Francis (Ill.) in a morning doubleheader and dropped both games by a score of 5-2 and 10-8. The Panthers finished 1-2 on the weekend and are now 15-7 on the year.
After walking the first two Saint Francis batters of the game, a three run homerun later in inning found DU down 3-0 right out of the gate. Senior
Karlee Despres started the process of chipping away at the lead in the second with a solo homerun to bring the Panthers to within two heading into the third inning.
The score remained 3-1 until the sixth when Saint Francis added an additional two runs to extend their lead to 5-1. In the seventh, freshman
Tami Weber tried to spark a rally for DU with a solo homerun but Davenport was unable to produce any more runs and suffered the 5-2 defeat.
Davenport only mustard five hits in the game to go along with three defensive errors and a total of eight walks by the pitching staff. Despres picked up her first loss of the year throwing three innings and giving up three earned runs.
In game two Davenport's bat started to heat up a little bit as they took an early 7-3 lead after just two innings. Saint Francis cut the lead to just one after scoring two runs in the third and then one in the fourth.
DU added another run in the fifth to go up 8-6 but a four run sixth for Saint Francis put the Panthers down for the first time of the game 10-8 which would end up being the final score as well.
Despres took her second straight loss on the mound pitching three innings and giving up four earned runs.
The Panthers will be back in action on Wednesday when they host NCAA DII Ferris State University for a 3:30pm doubleheader.
Post Game Quotes – Ronda Varnesdeel
Overall thoughts on games: “It is very difficult to win ball games when as a whole your offense, defense and pitching are not performing at their best. The game comes down to producing with runners on base and we did not do that the Davenport way today.”
