DU Uses an 11-1 Second Half to Defeat Alma College

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, the DU women's lacrosse season played host to Alma College for their second meeting of the season.  In the first game of the season, DU came away with a 14-13 OT win.  Hoping to complete the season sweep, the Panthers used an 11-1 second half to win 15-5 and raise their season record to 8-5.

Both teams battled hard on defense in the first half.  Schae Hoebeke was the first to score for Davenport on a free position attempt.  Alma then responded with two goals of their own to go up 2-1. 

The Panthers put together a strong offensive run with three goals in a row making the score 4-2.  Kaitlyn Lowden, Valerie Carr, and Taylor Balch all found the back of the net.  The first half ended with two quick goals from the Scots to tie the score at four goals each at halftime.

The second half was dominated by the Lady Panthers.  DU found the net 11 times, while the defense limited the Scots to just one goal.  Numerous players score in the second period, including Lowden (4), Balch (3), Michon Moline (2), Lexie Kruse (1), and Carr (1). 

Davenport displayed good teamwork throughout the game today using four assists to help each other score.  Carr had two of those assists.  Amanda Prins had a solid day in goal with 10 saves.

Post-Game Comments

Lexi Kruse on team's scoring today – “We added a new style of defense to practice so we could get used to how Alma plays.  It really helped us to cut through a lot better.  We played a lot more relaxed and had a lot better communication than the first time we played them.”

Kaitlyn Lowden on facing Alma a second time this season – “After winning in overtime last time, we wanted to prove that we are the better team.  That was our biggest focus today.”

Lowden on team's focus after halftime – “We just wanted to keep pushing in the second half.  Overall we really played together and with a lot of intensity throughout the entire game today.”

Post-Game Notes

Lowden finished the game with five goals and now has 24 on the season…Prins now has 144 saves this season, which is the second most in a season in program history behind Shayne Bradley's 212 in 2009…DU travels to Notre Dame (Ohio) on Tuesday for their last non-conference match-up of the season
