BLACKSBURG, Va. – Playing without many of their usual starters the Davenport rugby team went 3-1 at the Atlantic Coast Rugby League Sevens Tournament hosted by Virginia Tech on Saturday to finish third in the tournament. After finishing second in Group A, the Panthers defeated Maryland 48-5 in the third place game.
The Panthers opened group play with a 24-12 win against Virginia. Four different Davenport players scored trys in the Panthers win. Davenport ran into a tough North Carolina State squad in their second match as the Panthers fell to the Wolfpack 15-24. Davenport rebounded with a 57-0 rout of Virginia Military Institute to finish group play with a 2-1 record. NC State went 3-0 to take the top seed out of Group A.
The Panthers faced Maryland in the third place game and Davenport didn't waste any time putting away the Terrapins.
Anthony Welmers and
Kevin Lydon each scored two trys for the Panthers.
Adam Ries and
Nick Glocke also added trys for Davenport as the Panthers cruised to a 38-5 victory.
Adam Ries and
Travis Kamstra led the Panthers in trys on the day with six trys and five trys respectively.
Davenport will now turn their focus to their September 29
th 15s match-up against the University of Notre Dame. This will be the Panthers first 15s match of the season. Prior to this match, Davenport will hold their ring ceremony celebrating last season's National Championship.
The Panthers next 7s tournament will come on October 13
th in Marietta, Ga. for the Life Tournament.
