Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Davenport got on the board early and often highlighted with a six goal second period to cruise to an 11-3 season opening win over Western Michigan. Nine different players got on the board for Davenport led by
Tyler Quigley and
Bo Jacobs who each netted two goals. The Panthers and Stallions will be in action again tomorrow for a 5:30 PM start in Kalamazoo.
A young Davenport team that dressed 12 freshman and nine sophomores got off to a less than perfect start as Western Michigan took the opening faceoff down the ice and scored 35 second into the game. The quick score seemed to wake up the Panthers who responded quickly on a
Mason Bohlinger power play goal a minutes and a half later. Freshman
Matt Ogden and
Tyler Quigley each scored their first goal of their Davenport career later in the period to give the Panthers a 3-1 edge heading into the first intermission.
It was another quick goal to start a period for Western in the second as they scored to cut the Davenport lead to one 41 seconds in. But that was as close as the Stallions would get as Davenport would erupt with six goals to end the period.
Dustin Wischmeyer got the Panthers going with a goal just over three minutes into the period. Scores by
Cody Walsh,
Tyler Quigley,
Alex Ostrowski, and a pair of goals by
Bo Jacobs rounded out the scoring for the Panthers in the second period.
Andrew Frank and
Dan Zawacki each notched their first goals as Panthers in the third period. A goal by Western Michigan with seven minutes remaining in the game snapped a eight goal run by the Panthers. Davenport would go on to win 11-3.
Davenport and Western Michigan will face off again tomorrow at 5:30 PM. Live audio will be available for the game. You can also follow @DUAthletics on Twitter for score updates.
Post-Game Quotes
On team coming back with six goals in the second period after Western cut it to a one goal game – “They scored and we kept battling and Wischmeyer won a battle and scored a big goal that set us off for the rest of the game.”
On importance of starting season with a win – “Crucial, it's a league game right of the bat so we got a league win. It is also important to play them again tomorrow. We wanted that momentum going into tomorrow. We have 12 freshman and nine sophomores so its key to have success early. Success makes people work harder and if this team works hard we will be dangerous.”
