D1 Hockey Falls to Oakland 4-2; "Good Luck Duck" Series Tied 2-2

Box Score ROCHESTER, Mich. – A back-and-forth game for the first two periods, Davenport was unable to hold off Oakland in the final period as the Panthers fell 4-2 to even the “Good Luck Duck” series at two games each. Matt Ogden and Cody Walsh each scored for the Panthers. Davenport will return to action next weekend when the host Kent State for a pair of games.

After a scoreless first period, Davenport came out in the second and took advantage of an early power play opportunity when Matt Ogden scored to put the Panthers up 1-0. On the goal, Tyler Quigley redirected a Travis White shot from the point into the Oakland goalie were Ogden was able to collect the rebound and send the puck into the back of the net for the power play goal.

Oakland came back with a goal late in the period to tie the game at one. John Baker sent a shot to the far side of the net were Adam Novack was waiting to tip the shot it.

Davenport trailed for the first time when Oakland netted a goal 1:05 into the third period. But the Panthers were able to respond quickly with a goal by Cody Walsh just 50 seconds later. Robert Kleiman sent a pass to Walsh who shot a rocket from the blue line into the back of the net.

Midway through the third period, Oakland scored an even-strength goal to take a 3-2 lead over the Panthers. Davenport was able to put a lot of pressure on the Grizzlies late in the game thanks to a couple of Oakland penalties but weren't able to find the back of the net. With 52 seconds left in the game and the Davenport goal empty, Oakland's Ian Jacobs sent a wrist shot from behind his own red line, down the ice and into the Davenport net for a short-handed empty net goal to seal the Panthers fate.

Phil Graveline picked up the loss in net for the Panthers despite stopping 24 of the 27 shots he faced. Corey Hrischuk was credited with the win for Oakland after stopping 42 of Davenport's 44 shots on goal. The loss by Davenport evens the season series with Oakland at 2-2. The fifth and deciding game for the “Good Luck Duck” will take place after the GLCHL Tournament on Feb. 23rd.  The game will be played at Patterson Ice Center.

The Panthers begin a four-game homestead next weekend when the host Kent State. Davenport will follow that up with a pair of home games against Eastern Michigan before finishing the regular season with a home-and-home series against UM-Dearborn.

Post-Game Quotes – Head Coach Phil Sweeney

Thoughts on the Game – “I was happy with how we played, disappointed in the result.  I thought we took it to them for the majority of the game.  Our speed and transition was the best it has been all season.  We did  a lot of things right today, but they capitalized on a couple of our mistakes.  For years I have always said Oakland is the most opportunistic team we play, and tonight they did it to us again.  It was a great game between two rivals.  It sets up for another classic Davenport/Oakland series finale with us hosting game five.”

It was a 1-1 games heading into the third, what was the difference in that final period  – “I thought we ran out of gas a little bit in the third.  We were flying the first two periods and were a little winded at the end.  We were still getting good scoring opportunities but their goalie kept the puck out of the net.  Gravey played well again and had some huge saves to keep us in position to win.  We had 44 shots and a lot of quality scoring opportunities with those shots but we didn't finish.  Beating a team for the 3rd time in a season is very difficult, especially a quality team like Oakland.  We are a good team as well and I fully expect us to win the next time we play against each other.”
