Big First Half Lifts Panthers to 67-51 Road Win at Lourdes

Box Score

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Davenport picked up a critical road win in Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play as they defeated Lourdes 67-51 on Saturday night. The victory lifts the Panthers to 17-4 overall and 10-3 in league play as they remain within one game of WHAC leader Madonna. DU will return to the Student Center on Wednesday to host Northwestern Ohio at 7:30pm.

JaVontae Ford got hot right when the Panthers needed him to as the forward posted a game high 21 points on 8-11 shooting from the field. DeArmond Davis scored all 11 of his points in the second half after battling foul trouble in the opening twenty minutes and he was the only other Panther in double-figures as four others finished with at least four points.

In a game featuring two of the best defensive teams in the country, the opening five minutes definitely was a showcase of that with only five points scored but the host Lourdes put up all of them and eventually led 7-2 at the 14:46 mark. That was when Davenport started their run on a pair of free throws from freshman Tre Tigner and DU ran off the next eight after that to lead 12-7. Also highlighting the run were three-pointers from Derek Brooks and Thomas Drew forcing LU into a timeout.

After Lourdes broke the run, DU used two more significant scoring spurts (9-2 and 9-0) to open a 15 point lead at halftime. Seven different players scored in the opening twenty minutes led by Derek Brook's nine and Thomas Drew's six. The Panthers limited the host Gray Wolves to just 27.3 shooting while allowing

Dominez Burnett got the second half going with a thundering alley-oop dunk and the Panthers quickly pulled away upping their lead to 20 at 41-21 with 15:49 to play. After the Gray Wolves scored 12 of the next 16 points, red-shirt junior JaVontae Ford took over and scored nine straight points and 12 of 14 for the Panthers to give DU full control of the game. Davenport would hold its largest lead of the night of 21 (60-39) but a late rally by the home team got them as close at 11 but DU closed out an important road win 67-51.

Davenport finished the game shooting 52% from the floor while limiting the Gray Wolves to 39%. The Panthers connected on 7 of their 15 shots from behind the arc and made 10-11 free-throws in the win. The only stat that went against DU was the battle on the glass  as Lourdes had a 29-25 edge.

Post-Game Quotes - head coach Burt Paddock

On getting important road win - "We got back to focusing on ourselves and getting better every game...With so many young guys, we as a coaching staff got back to what we do well and put our guys in a position to do those things."

On hanging tough despite Lourdes' late run - "We used a few of our timeouts to get back to doing what we did well to get the lead. We ran some plays that got us some open looks and we stopped giving up some open looks on the defensive end."
