GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After edging Eastern Michigan in the Friday night's meeting, the eighth-ranked Davenport DI hockey team returned to the Patterson Ice Center and produced a much different result. Andrew Frank recorded a pair of goals and assists each, Luke McCarthy scored the first goal of the game and added an assist as the Panthers rolled past the Eagles 7-1 in a GLCHL matchup Saturday night.

The Panthers (24-9-0-1, 18-3-0-1 GLCHL) took advantage of the Eagles (15-20, 9-12 GLCHL) visits to the penalty box, going 5-for-7 on the power play. DU also scored shorthanded.

Davenport got off to a solid start offensively in the first period, but it wasn't until the 14:17 mark when it broke the ice. With Eastern Michigan playing shorthanded due to a penalty, Andrew Frank and Cody Walsh worked together to bring the puck from their zone and after the shot near the left post deflected, Luke McCarthy picked up the rebound with a one-touch shot into the back of the net.

The Panthers managed to pick up their second goal at 5:24 and their third 21 seconds later. Behind the Eagles net, Alex Ostrowski sent a pass toward center ice where Mason Bohlinger delivered an open shot into the goal. With the Panthers on the power play, Cody Walsh picked up a loose puck following a deflection off the Eagles goaltender to put it into the back of the net.

Davenport scored three of its goals in the second period with a player in the penalty box. At 17:12, McCarthy crossed the puck to the center where Frank took a shot near the crease for a power play goal. With the Panthers shorthanded, Phil Wendecker brought the puck to the left goal post from the right side and made a backhanded shot into the net for a 5-0 lead at 7:09. As DU was on the power play within the final seconds of the middle period, Zawacki blasted a shot near the edge of the Eagles zone for the sixth goal of the game.

The fifth and final power play goal for Davenport came 3:45 into the third period. Tyler Quigley took a shot between the left goal post and the faceoff circle off passes by Bohlinger and Ostrowski.

DU netminder Phil Graveline has a strong performance between the posts, taking a shutout all the way to 14:21 mark of the third period.

The Panthers will take some time off and will get back on the ice to begin a home-and-home series with UM-Dearborn. The first meeting will take place at Dearborn Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m., while the second game will move over to the Patterson Ice Center 24 hours later.

Post-Game Quotes – Head coach Phil Sweeney

On the difference between the two meetings against EMU – “Special teams were huge tonight. We had five power play goals and a shorthanded goal, so our special teams really turned it on tonight. That was the biggest difference overall, we were capitalizing on our chances.”

On if his team's style of play – “We tried keeping everything in front of us and you take some of the attack out of the play. We're working on our trap in the last period and a half because we have to be sharp for where we want this thing to go. We want to have that running really nice at nationals. In game scenario, if you can work on stuff like that, you got to take advantage.”

Post-Game Notes
Davenport now leads the all-time series against Eastern Michigan 17-1, having won all 17 consecutively…The Panthers have never lost to the Eagles at home improving to 8-0 at Patterson against EMU.
