ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Davenport suffered from a poor first half again as they dropped their second consecutive game with a 66-63 loss to host Concordia on Wednesday night. The setback is first time DU has lost back to back WHAC games since the 2007-08 season as they fall to 14-4 on the year and 7-3 in league action. DU returns to play on Saturday when they host No. 18 Indiana Tech at 5pm.
Derek Brooks matched a career high with 16 points off the bench and
Gabe VanderJagt regained his shooting touch to finish with 14 points but it was not enough to help Davenport get a much needed road victory. The Panthers struggled from the field shooting just 37% while the host Cardinals outshot DU 26-8 at the foul line.
Scoring did not come easy in the first 10 minutes of the game as Concordia slowly built a 12-6 lead before
Derek Brooks connected on a triple with 10:46 to play. That would be as close as DU would get in the opening 20 minutes however as the Cardinals started hitting shots from the floor to build their largest lead of 12 at 23-11. Concordia finished the first half up 11 which marked the second straight game DU has trailed at the break.
Looking to win their first game of the season after trailing at halftime, the Panthers opened the second half by scoring 11 of the first 13 points to get within two at 35-33 and got it down to just one at 38-37 when
JaVontae Ford took an outlet pass the length of the court and threw it down for an emphatic dunk.
When it looked as if DU would finally take a lead, CUAA had other ideas and turned their one point advantage into a 12-point margin with just under 4:00 to play thanks to a 6-0 spurt with four of them coming from the foul line. Davenport did get the lead down to just four after a
Gabe VanderJagt 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining but the Cards finished strong at the line to upset the Panthers.
Post-Game Notes
The loss drops Davenport to 7-11 all-time against the Cardinals as the Panthers had won 7 of the last 8 meetings…It marked the fourth time this season that DU has trailed at the half and the Panthers have suffered losses in all four…DU failed to shoot above 45% for the fourth time this season and they have also lost all four of those games…
