MENTOR, Ohio – The Davenport D1 hockey team went up against the Colorado State Rams in game two of the ACHA Showcase. They would bounce back quickly from last nights game to take 1-0 victory over Colorado State. It was a great goaltending matchup on both sides. However, Panther net minder
Phil Graveline would come up big to record his first shutout of the season. Davenport will be back in action again tomorrow as they take on Towson at 10:15 a.m.
The game opened up with a fast pace and neither team being able to sustain constant pressure in the other teams zone. Both teams had a few chances but could not put one away. The Panthers were unable to put one past the Colorado State goaltender.
The second period started the same as the first with both teams trading chances. The Panthers were able to make the Rams uncomfortable as Davenport was able to put on treacherous fore-check. The Panthers were able to cause a few turnovers but could not score.
Mason Bohlinger was able to jump on a Ram turnover in slot and put it past the Rams net minder with 11 minutes left in the second period to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Panthers had three minutes left on a Colorado State major penalty, but was unable to score.
A few minutes later Bohlinger was able to get a hold of another Colorado State turnover, but could not put home.
In the final stanza the Panthers had an early power play chance but was unable to cash in. The Panthers were able to kill off a couple Ram power plays thanks to the some big plays by
Zack Blumke.
Phil Graveline came up with some huge saves to keep the Panthers ahead 1-0.
DU had a late power play chance looking for some insurance but was unable to muster a goal. Both goalies came with some big saves to keep the game 1-0. Graveline would come up big on a late Rams power play for his first shutout of the season.
After the game head coach
Phil Sweeney talked about his goaltenders,
Phil Graveline, performance, "It was awesome, any time you can shut a team out is a great accomplishment. Some of the saves he made today were awesome. We came out flat and unfortunately he does not have the luxury of coming out flat, he has to play 60 minutes and he did an awesome job."
Coach Sweeney continued to talk about things to work for the game coming up tomorrow, "We have to play our position, the guys know. We have the speed to play, but we have to play inside our position. We had 20 guys trying to do 20 things, we were running around quite a bit."
The Panthers will conclude the ACHA Showcase as they play their third game in three days against Towson tomorrow morning at 10:15 a.m.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport moves to 3-0-0-1 on the season after the win tonight.
Phil Graveline picked up his first shutout of the season and the first for the Panthers as team.
Mason Bohlinger was the only player to pick up a point in the game today.
