MENTOR, Ohio – The Davenport D1 hockey team finished up the ACHA Showcase as they faced off against the Towson Tigers. Head coach Phil Sweeney's squad would come away with the victory by a score of 5-1. Bo Jacobs and Stephen Flood would lead the way for the Panthers as they each had one goal and one assist. The Panthers will head to Lynchburg, Va. next weekend to take on No. 10 Liberty University in a big weekend series as to open up the Blue-Gray Cup.
The final game of the ACHA Showcase opened up with a lot of physical play to set the tempo of the game early. The Panthers took a lead on nice stretch pass from Bo Jacobs to give Luke McCarthy a breakaway toward the net. McCarthy was able to finish it as he put it past the Towson goalie.
With six minutes left in the first the Tigers had a five-on-three power play and they were able to slip a pass back door and they were able to finish to tie the game at one. However, the game would not be tied for long.
The Panthers were able to put pressure on Towson in their own zone to cause a turnover. Robert Kleiman picked up the loose puck and centered it to Stephen Flood who was able to beat the goalie high on his blocker side to give DU a 2-1 lead. Davenport would come back 25 seconds later to put another goal on the board. Mason Bohllinger was able to jam in a loose puck that was sitting in the crease; Kevin Noble got the assist on the Bohlinger goal.
The second period opened up with Davenport taking a 3-1 lead into the period. The Panthers came out quick holding pressure in the Tiger zone. They were not able to put home until seven minutes into the period. Andrew Frank was able find the back of the net as Chris Ballatore and Josh Munford were able to work the cycle game on the half board and then feed it to Frank in the slot to tip it in.
Two minutes later the Panthers were able to take a 5-1 lead halfway through the period as Bo Jacobs put his second point and first goal of the game on the board. Kleiman and Flood picked up their second points of the game as they were credited with assists on the goal.
There was not much action in the third period in regards to scoring. Both teams had a few chances to score but could not come away with a goal. The physicality, however, brought about some post whistle scrums and penalties. The final score of the game was 5-1 in favor of the Panthers.
After the game head coach Phil Sweeney said, "Today we learned we have to come to the rink and be read to go. We were a little loose before we started the game, a little too loose. The captains and leaders rallied the team. Bo and Munford set the tone of the game."
The Panthers will make their way to Lynchburg, Va., as they will have a weekend series against No. 10 Liberty to open up the Blue-Gray Cup. Davenport will look to retain the cup as they won the series against Liberty last season.
