GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Letesha Cannonier returned to the field at the right time.

After missing six matches due to injury, the junior forward found the back off the net off a corner kick from Lizzie Paul for the only goal of the match in the No. 7 Davenport women's soccer team's win over crosstown rival Cornerstone. With the win, the Panthers clinch at least a share of their second straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular-season championship on a cold Wednesday evening at CU Soccer Field Wednesday.

The Panthers (14-1-0, 7-0-0 WHAC) need to win one of the two remaining matches to claim the title outright. They travel to second-place Northwestern Ohio Saturday at 3 p.m. for their first attempt. The Racers, in their first season playing women's soccer, moved into second place with an 11-5-0 overall record, 5-2-0 in the WHAC, after crushing visiting Marygrove 13-0 earlier in the day.

The Golden Eagles (9-5-1, 4-2-1 WHAC) was in control for a majority of the opening half. While outshooting the Panthers 5-4 in the first 45 minutes, three of Cornerstone's shots were inches away from crossing the goal line.

Davenport turned the tide around within the final 20 minutes of the first half and was in control for a good portion of the second. One close opportunity came midway through the second half when Cannonier's shot from the right side was punched over the crossbar by Cornerstone keeper Allison Snowden.

While the Panthers had seven corner kick opportunities in the second half, one proved to be the difference as Paul's kick from the left side made one bounce in the box before Cannonier knocked it into the right corner of the net at 78:40.

The Panthers would outshoot the Golden Eagles 12-10 on the evening while evening the number of corner kicks at eight.
