GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The second half of the opening weekend home and home series against the Western Michigan Stallions went to Davenport. The Panthers captured game two with a 6-1 win. The game featured some bad blood that carried over from last night's game between the two teams.
Bo Jacobs and
Jake Holden led the way as they each had two points in the game.
In the first period there was more hard hitting that carried over from last nights game. The Panthers came out hitting and had a few chances in the period. Davenport finally broke through as
Jake Holden jumped on loose puck at the top of the face dot and fired it past the Western Michigan goaltender to put the Panthers up 1-0.
As the period wore on both teams continued to trade scoring chances. Panther goaltender
Matt Kaludis came up with some huge stops. The Stallions had a brief five on three advantage, but Kaludis came up big to keep the Panthers ahead 1-0.
With one minute left in the period
Kevin Noble put the puck in the back of the net to put the Panthers up 2-0. Holden and
Luke McCarthy got the assists on the goal.
Period number two opened up fast as
Bo Jacobs scored a goal from the high slot just over a minute into the period to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. The Panthers continued to maintain the pressure in the Stallions zone but could not put one in the net.
With 10:50 left in the second period
Matt Ogden picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and had a breakaway and roofed a back hand over the sliding Stallion goalie to score a shorthanded goal and give the Panthers a 4-0 lead.
Three minutes after Davenport would increase their lead the Stallions would score their first goal of the game, as Nicholas Elliott was able to get one past Kaludis.
The intensity picked up after the Stallions put one on the board. The hitting increased and so did the magnitude of each hit. The post whistle action also increased and became more intense as the period wore on.
Surprisingly, the third period opened up a little mellower than the previous two. Both teams were trading shots at each end. However, the intensity would pick up again as the penalties started to pile up for both teams.
Robert Kleiman finally broke through in the third period as he scored an unassisted goal with four minutes left to give the Panthers a 5-1 lead. Jacobs would add his second goal of the game to close out the scoring with a 6-1 victory for Davenport.
The Panthers will head to the ACHA Showcase next weekend in Cleveland, Ohio. They will open up the showcase by playing No. 9 Delaware at 7:15 on Friday.
Post-Game Notes
Jake Holden made his first career collegiate start and tallied his first career goal and assist in the game. The Panthers had 42 shots on goal and scored two goals in each period.
Matt Kaludis played all 60 minutes and recorded 18 saves in the game.
