GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 7 Davenport women's soccer team's run without allowing a goal ended at 555:48 but it kept the win streak intact as Lizzie Paul's golden goal in the 102nd minute lifted the Panthers to a 2-1 double overtime victory at crosstown rival Aquinas Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers, winners of 10 straight matches, improve to 11-1 overall and take sole possession of first place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference with a 4-0 record.
Davenport had control of possession for a majority of the first half and had several opportunities to break the ice. With 21:30 left,
Thelma Gylfadottir took a free kick along the right line of the penalty area but Saint keeper Molly O'Connor was able to break the cross.
As the first half approached the 10-minute mark,
Lizzie Paul used her power to send a free kick from 25 yards to the upper left corner of the goal but was caught by O'Connor. Gylfadottir had another close opportunity to find the back of the net.
Natalie McHale sent a loose ball back into the goal box and over O'Connor's head, but Gylfadottir's header rolled right of the post.
Both teams entered halftime without a goal but Davenport held a 9-2 shooting advantage, 3-1 on goal, in the opening half.
Aquinas picked up the intensity in the second half but it was Davenport that got on the board first when Paul blasted a free kick right in front of the penalty line that ricocheted off a defender and into the goal.
As the match entered the final minute, the Saints found a late netter with 45 seconds left. Elizabeth Vaughn sent a free kick from midfield to the left side of the goal box where Maggie Keiffer's one-touch roll passed
Michelle Marcus and into the goal. Both teams couldn't find the back of the net at the end of regulation. It was the first goal Davenport has allowed since the 74
th minute at Northwood on Sept. 11, running up to nearly six straight matches.
After going without a goal in the first overtime period, Davenport caught a break when an uncovered
Abbey Tyson had enough time to find Paul in the right side to make several touches before beating O'Connor for the golden goal.
The Panthers will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., Saturday to face Indiana Tech in a WHAC Tournament rematch from last year. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
