DEARBORN, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey team looked to get back on the winning track after losing their last three games in fierce rivalries. DU came into the weekend after a loss last week to then No. 13 Adrian by the score of 4-0. The Panthers did just that as they beat GLCHL conference foe Michigan-Dearborn 9-3, as
Andrew Frank,
Travis White, and
Phil Wendecker all had two goal games. The Panthers will take the ice again tomorrow, as they will conclude the home and home and series with the Wolverines at 7:30 p.m. at Patterson Ice Center.
The game opened as both teams were looking to break the ice and take an early lead, but the first goal of the game did not come until 6:54 left in the first period as
Cody Walsh was able to find the back of the net on a pass from
Chris Ballatore. Less than one minute later Michigan-Dearborn was able to tie the game back up at one. DU closed the period out getting a goal with 54 seconds left on the clock as
Tyler Layle was able to score his first collegiate goal to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.
Davenport went on a scoring tare as they put five goals on the board in the second period.
Phil Wendecker opened up the scoring in the period, as he was able to tally a power play goal. Just after Wendecker increased the DU lead to two
Travis White added another goal, which was followed by Wedecker's second goal of the game, as the Panthers went up 5-1.
With 11:25 left in the second period
Andrew Frank scored the first of his two goals in the game, but the Wolverines were able to get another goal as the lead was cut to 6-2. However, Frank came back to score another goal to give the Panthers a 7-2 lead after the second period.
Luke McCarthy opened up the scoring in the third period to give DU an 8-2 lead partway through the final period. The third period did not see as much scoring as the previous period, but
Matt Ogden was able to connect with White with 30 second left in the game to up 9-2. The Wolverines snuck in a goal with five seconds left to make the final 9-3 in favor of the Panthers.
After the game head coach
Phil Sweeney said, "Tonight we played well in all three zones. We had a great week of practice and it carried over to the game tonight. We are starting to get guys back from injuries and some of the nagging injuries are clearing up. Tonight was fun, we will have to refocus tomorrow for the game, but tonight we played well and there were a lot of smiles in the locker room again. We are hoping to build on tonight."
The Panthers will take on Michigan-Dearborn again tomorrow to finish up the weekend series. The puck drop for tomorrow's game is at 7:30 p.m. at Patterson Ice Center.

The Panthers are now 5-3-0-1 and are now tied with Michigan-Dearborn in the GLCHL with nine points.
