ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Davenport D1 hockey team looked to bounce back after splitting games with Kent State last weekend as they opened up the Good Luck DUck series in Rochester, Mich. against Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies of Oakland scored early and never looked back as they led the game from start to finish to take the game 6-3. DU and Oakland will face-off again tomorrow for game two of the intense series at Patterson Ice Center at 3:30 p.m.

In the opening period of the Good Luck DUck series, DU looked to come out and start strong as they looked to hang on to the DUck. However, Oakland struck first with less than one minute gone in the period Oakland was able to get the puck past Phil Graveline.

Both teams had a chance on the power play to score but no one was able to capitalize. With just four minutes left in the period Oakland scored on a 5-on-3-man advantage to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room.

The second period opened with a lot of penalties and both teams getting special teams work in early the period, but Bo Jacobs finally got the Panthers on the board with an unassisted shorthanded goal to cut the lead in half. However, Oakland came right back to score on the power play less than a minute to increase the lead back to two.

With more penalties came more special teams work, and Mason Bohlinger was able to reel the Oakland lead back down to one as he score on an assist from Winston Hofer to make it a 3-2 game. The special teams continued as Oakland scored on a 4-on-4 to take the 4-2 lead into the locker room.

DU looked to try and mount a comeback heading into the third period, but the Golden Grizzlies were able to get on the board first in the period as they scored at the 16:16 mark in the period to increase their lead to 5-2. The special teams play continued as both teams had power play chances throughout the period but could cash in.

The game closed out with the Panthers scoring a power play goal with two minutes left in the game to cut the lead to 5-3, but the Grizzlies ended the game with an empty netter to win 6-3.

Head coach Phil Sweeney's thoughts on what seen in tonight's game, "We have to play a complete game, we have spurts we are just not playing 60 minutes. It was tough to get into a good flow there were a lot of penalties on both sides. It is tough to get into any kind of rhythm with that. They had the same penalties we did and they scored, it is tough to bounce from two five on three and an empty netter. Guys that logged the ice have to produce"

The Panthers will be back at Patterson Ice Center tomorrow night for game two of the Good Luck DUck series. The puck drop for game two is at 3:30 p.m.

Post-Game Notes

Phil Graveline made 33 saves in the game as DU drops to 7-5-0-1 on the season. Goal scorers for the Panthers were Mason Bohlinger, Travis White and Bo Jacobs. Winston Hofer and Andrew Frank were the only Panthers to get assist in the game. There was a total of six special teams goals in the game by both teams.
