GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After scoring nine goals against Michigan-Dearborn the night before the D1 hockey looked to orchestrate a similar result tonight. DU came away with a victory, but by a much closer margin, as they won 4-2. Head coach Phil Sweeney relied on his penalty-killing unit and a balanced attack to get the victory as the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines were 1-for-9 on the power play and DU had four different goal scorers in the game. The Panthers will be back in action next week as they faceoff against Kent State in two games next weekend in Kent, Ohio.

Davenport looked to keep the momentum from last nights win and come out fast, DU did just that as they controlled the puck in the early going. The Panthers finally scored just three minutes into the game Luke McCarthy was able to find Cody Walsh at the point, as Walsh blasted a shot past the Wolverines net minder. DU controlled the pace of the game, and kill off a few Michigan-Dearborn penalties, as Phil Graveline made a some huge stops keep the score at 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

Michigan-Dearborn quick in the second period as they struck early on a back door deflection to tie the game at one. After several minutes of back and forth play and both teams unable to score on power play chances, Davenport broke the tie as Andrew Frank collected a stretch from Dustin Wischmeyer and skated to the top of the circle to beat the goaltender after the puck bounced out of his glove an into the net. The second period ended with Davenport holding a 2-1 lead.

The third period opened with both teams looking for a goal, and the first goal did not come until the halfway point in the period when Tyler Layle shot the puck from the blue line and it found its way to the back of the net to increase the DU lead to two. Five minutes later the Wolverines cut the lead in half as the puck ping ponged past Graveline. With under a minute in the game the Wolverines pulled their goalie and Davenport dumped the puck down for an empty net goal by Phil Wendecker to come away with a 4-2 win.

After the game head coach Phil Sweeney talked about getting two wins this weekend and moving ahead to next week, "It is nice to get back on a winning streak, we had a lot of penalties today, but our penalty kill stood up like it has all year. We kept on it, and now we have to move forward onto next weekend and Kent State is a new opponent."

The Panthers will continue their GLCHL stretch as they head to Kent, Ohio to faceoff in a weekend series next Friday and Saturday against Kent State. Game one is on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
