GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – As a team, Davenport struggled to hit free-throws down the stretch, but senior JaVontae Ford hit the two biggest of the night with 2.1 seconds remaining to lift the No. 10 ranked Panthers to an 81-80 road win at Cornerstone University. Dominez Burnett led all scorers with 29 points as he helped DU improve to 6-0 on the year and 2-0 in conference play. Davenport will host Lourdes University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Dominez Burnett again had the hot hand for Davenport as they pulled off a solid early-season win at rival Cornerstone. The sophomore and reigning WHAC Player of the Week finished with a game high 29 points on 9-11 shooting from the field and 8-13 from the line. JaVontae Ford chipped in with 17 while Mike Betcher came off the bench to add 11 in the win.
Cornerstone, which had lost just one game (a setback to No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan) coming into the Wednesday night showdown, jumped out to a 15-7 lead just 5:49 into the contest. DU, which has won three of its first five games on the road or at neutral sites, stormed back with a 9-0 run finished off by steal and layup from Ford to take the lead at 16-15.
The two teams would trade buckets for a remainder of the half and Cornerstone actually went into the locker room with a 46-44 edge thanks to a pair of free-throws late from Wes Hudson who finished the night with a team high 19 points. The foul-filled opening half saw the two teams combine for 39 free-throw attempts.
CU opened the second half with a bang scoring 11 of the first 15 points to up their lead to nine which would be the largest of the game for either team. DU slowly started to chip away at the lead and finally got it with 2:10 to play on three free-throws from freshman Nick Gamble.
After CU tied it once again, one of 13 throughout the game, Davenport got a layup from Dominez Burnett and a stop on the defensive end and had a chance to ice the game at the line but the Panthers converted only one of four foul shots to keep the Golden Eagles alive. Cornerstone then went ahead (80-79) with just over 15 seconds to play on a layup from Jake Plite setting up the final play that eventually sent JaVontae Ford to the line. Ford nailed both foul shots and a last gasp by CU went in and out to end the game with DU winning 81-80.
Davenport shot 47.1% as a team compared to just 38.5% from the home team while the Golden Eagles held the edge on the glass 44-35.
DU will return home for their next two games before Thanksgiving break as they host Lourdes on Saturday at 3 p.m.
