GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Davenport women's rugby team took two of three contests in its debut at the USA Rugby 7s National Championship Saturday afternoon to advance from pool play to the elimination stage Sunday. The Panthers, who picked up wins against Princeton and Georgia Tech but suffered a defeat to two-time defending national champion Norwich, will return to Bryan Park Sunday and face California in the quarterfinal at 11 a.m.
Game 1: Norwich 31, Davenport 5
It did not take long for Norwich to get on the board as the defending champions took a 7-0 lead in the first minute of the contest and added two more tries in the fourth and sixth minute. Brenna Donahue was the only Panther to score in the game when she carried the ball into the try zone in the 10th minute.
Game 2: Davenport 20, Princeton 0
Davenport was in complete control of the contest against Princeton. Gabriela Florez recorded the tries the Panthers needed to secure the win in the fourth and eighth minute. Karah Warriner added some breathing room with a try in the 11th minute and Danielle Ordway put the game out of the Tigers reach with a try in the 13th minute.
Game 3: Davenport 22, Georgia Tech 10
Florez immediately went to work with a try in the first minute and a pair of tries by Ordway in the third and sixth minutes extended DU's lead to 15-0. The Buzz escaped the shutout with a try one minute into the second half. Brittany O'Dell recorded her only try and conversion on the day in the 12th minute but the Buzz had the last scoring opportunity with a try in the 13th minute.
