Score: Davenport Finishes Sixth Overall
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Davenport women's rugby team closed day two of the USA Rugby 7s National Tournament Sunday going 1-2, falling just short from winning the Plate and finishing sixth overall in the playoffs. Davenport suffered a defeat to California in the Cup elimination bracket put picked up a win over the Golden Bears' Bay Area rival Stanford in the semifinal round of the Plate. The Panthers run for the Plate came up short with a 12-5 defeat to Indiana.
Game 1: California 17, Davenport 5 (Cup Quarterfinal)
Cal broke the ice with a try one minute into the contest but Davenport evened the score 5-5 one minute later when Brittany O'Dell carried the ball to the try zone. The Golden Bears regained the lead one minute before the break and never looked back, recording a try in the 11th minute and made a conversion to complete the 17-5 score.
Game 2: Davenport 20, Stanford 10 (Plate Semifinal)
The first half saw Stanford having to play a game of cat-and-mouse with the Panthers. O'Dell got the Panthers started with a try one minute into the game, but the Cardinal answered back with a try of its own one minute later. Davenport regained the lead in the fourth minute with a try by Danielle Ordway. Although Stanford tied the game again in the fifth minute, the Panthers regained the lead with a try by Julia Mayer in the seventh minute and Ordway cashed in some insurance points one minute later to help secure Davenport a 20-10 win.
Game 3: Indiana 12, Davenport 5 (Plate Final)
Davenport saw itself trailing Indiana all throughout the game. The Hoosiers' Caroline Walters tallied two tries, one in the third minute and the second in the fifth, to take a 10-0 lead. Indiana also added some breathing room with a conversion in the fifth minute. Davenport took advantage of playing with an extra player after the Hoosiers were penalized on an illegal tackle. Ordway broke through the Hoosier defense and scored a try in the 13th minute. Although a similar illegal tackle by the Panthers forced the remainder of the contest to be played 6-v-6, the Panthers made one last effort trying to even the score within the final seconds but the ball found its way out of bounds to secure the win for Indiana.
