ORANGE CITY, Iowa. – Davenport saw its season opening win streak continue with another impressive showing out in Iowa as they fought off a late rally by the host and No. 15 ranked Red Raiders of Northwestern College to post an 88-82 win. The victory lifts the No. 10 ranked Panthers to 4-0 on the year as they now turn their attention to conference play as they travel to Detroit next Saturday to face Marygrove College at 3 p.m.
Dominez Burnett poured in 22 points while JaVontae Ford had 21 as the duo lifted the Panthers to an impressive road win at Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) foe Northwestern (Iowa).
In an early season Top-15 showdown, the Panthers and Red Raiders traded leads for much of the opening half with neither leading by more than six. With 5:01 to play in the first, Northwestern led 40-34, but Davenport used a 15-5 run to close out the half leading 49-45. That would be a lead they would never relinquish.
After Northwestern cut the lead to just one on an opening possession three-pointer, DU used another run (this time a 10-2 spurt) which was finished off by a three-pointer from freshman Kevin Rich to lead 59-50. The lead would hover between 3-9 points for the remainder of the game and DU iced the victory with solid free-throw shooting down the stretch.
Also finding double-figured for the Panthers were a pair of freshman, Kevin Rich with 14 and Nick Gamble with 13. Sophomore Dawud Czerniawski led the battle on the glass with six and also finished with a team high three steals. DU finished the night shooting 49.2 % from the field and a season best 82.6% from the foul line.
Northwestern's Zach Leeper led all scorers with 24 points and he was followed by 20 from Joey Habtemariam. The Red Radiers have now lost two of their last three, both to ranked teams.
Davenport will start defense of their third straight WHAC title next Saturday when they travel to Detroit to face the Mustangs of Marygrove College. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. or 20 minutes following the women's game.
